08.25.2008 Storied history always comes to mind with the mere mention of the Flamingo
Las Vegas. The desert oasis created in the 1940's by Bugsy Segal was only
the beginning. Can you believe those pink flamingos are still
around? I've tried coaxing them to my pool but they keep resisting.
I keep returning to the Flamingo for the entertainment, not those darn
flamingos. Monti Rock III and the Flamingo go back ten years when I first
moved to Las Vegas. The late Mike Crawley was Entertainment Director at
the time and tried to build a late night television show at the Flamingo which
of course would star yours truly. Unfortunately the effort to make me
normal failed even after adding Aki as a co-hostess. The featured
entertainment back then was the Rockettes with frequent billings that included
Forever Plaid.
With the arrival of Flamingo's President Don Marrandino, a new chapter is being written. Mr. Marrandino has made the Flamingo a true variety filled venue for show business enthusiasts, which of course would include me. From Nathan Burton's afternoon show of magic to the late night X-Burlesque the Flamingo has been hitting home runs, not to mention the upcoming Donny and Marie Osmond show scheduled to open in September.
Recently I caught a new arrival to the Flamingo, Vinnie Favorito. Funny, funny, funny. Vinnie's act is effortless and easy. as he makes his audience the show. Earlier he was appearing at O'Shea's downtown and originally started his Las Vegas outing at Binion's Horseshoe. Vinnie is a prize, performing for a full house and sold out shows seven nights a week. This is one of those not to be missed shows and the guy is really funny, or did I say that already?

On the same night I caught the 10:00 PM George Wallace show, "I Been Think'n" with guest star Jennifer Holiday. George, another really funny man. always keeps his shows fresh and up to date, and Jennifer, in great voice and looked beautiful. The sound of her voice brought back memories of her Broadway appearance some twenty-seven years ago in Dream Girls where I first saw her. Jennifer's performance can only be enhanced with live music. Wish she would consider that for her next appearance here.
The Flamingo Las Vegas offered up a great evening with dinner and entertainment that sent my party home exhausted from laughter but warm hearted with music.
My wonderful friend Liza Minelli was performing last week at Primm. Tickets were being given away in order to get people to drive from Las Vegas to Primm, a short thirty miles. At the Orleans, Steve Lawrence, without Edie, sang his heart out. The show was sold out every night, no comps to be had. Steve Lawrence still in great voice but my spies tell me the show was a bit long. Clint Holmes was performing at the Judy Bailey Theater and donated the door receipts to a scholarship fund. Cher at Caesers Colossum completely sold out but not to worry readers, be sure to check the Internet for deals on tickets. The deals do exist.
For some fifty years Little Anthony and the Imperials have been performing. Once you heard "Going Out of My Head" you couldn't get it out of your head. To celebrate their 50th Anniversary they will be at the Tropicana September 27th. Tickets are already on sale for their 8:00 PM show. Of all the groups from their era, Little Anthony and the Imperials are still performing with the original artists which is amazing.
Jeff McBride, a multi-talented performer who does mime, magic, and Kabuki, has opened at Palace Station in the Sound Trax Showroom. He will be performing nightly at 7:30pm (dark Tuesdays).
More news from local television. Jeff Graney, accused of soliciting ??????? And poor Ron Futrell did nothing wrong except hitting somebody's car. He is now doing fill-in news brodacasting on local radio (840AM ) As the say, here today, gone tomorrow.
From the Alternative Corner..Yes, it's true. Ellen Degeneres and Portia have tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in Califorrnia. My fellow Puerto Rican, Ricky Martin's surrogate has given birth to twins, and Clay Aikins (who is still in the closet) is the proud parent of a baby boy.
Roseanne Barr who is currently at the Sahara is at it again.
Roseanne, Mr. Monti says, "pick on somebody your own size, my
darling". Throughout her career Roseanne had a television talk
show, a cooking show and a successful run as a sitcom queen. Most of us
remember her appearance at the baseball game where she defiled the Star
Spangled Banner. It seems that in her blog this week she went after Angelina
Jolie and Brad Pitt. Brad and Angelina have done tremendous humanitarian
work including their New Orleans efforts. Even Angelina's father Jon
Voigt came to their defense over remarks made on Roseanne's blog.
Roseanne's been back peddling but the damage has already been done. Will
she ever learn?
Like so many others, I've joined the bloggers but I take heed and try to offer up helpful and useful information about Las Vegas that potential visitors might use. I've been writing columns for the last nine years, and I accept the responsibilities given and take all my journalist's efforts seriously while trying to add a little flare, a little fun, a little side-bar.
David Saxe, from Planet Hollywood's Miracle Mile Shops V Theater, is reported to have turned down Terry Fator, who is now considered to be a hundred million dollar star after winning on America's Got Talent last year.
It's a little early to get excited but American Idol is on the road seeking new talent for their latest edition of the show. Soon your columnist will have a show to deal with finding a young Las Vegas star and I'll become the Simon Cowell of Las Vegas. I'll bet you can't wait for that scene!
A wonderful friend Joanne Dowling, who has been a mainstay at the Review Journal, is leaving her position with the local publication but we know Joanne's genius will shine through and she'll land on her feet. We love you dear friend.
And, as always , TheReverend Monti will see you next week.

08.18.2008 The week started out with an evening at Palms Place where well known producer of Crazy Girls and La Cage at the Riviera, Mr. Norbert Aleman, previewed his latest creation. Las Vegas Crazy Girls Under Cover is a movie produced by Norbert and scheduled for pay for view television. It's kind of Norbert's version of Charlie's Angels. A sidebar note regarding yours truly, Monti Rock III, and Norbert. When I first arrived in Las Vegas Norbert and Steve Sciricca embraced me with open arms. Steve actually wanted to build a room at the Riviera for me but alas, I had other plans to become Cindy Adams on steroids. Wonder if it's too late to reconsider?
Following the preview of the movie there was a wonderful party at Simon's by the pool at Palm Place where Alicia Jacobs was busy doing television interviews for NEWS 3.
The 2008 Olympics on television has allowed us insight into what might be considered the cultural revolution of the Chinese. It appears they spared no expense in an effort to create the grandest facilities for sport that could be designed. The United States has been well introduced to the 2008 Olympic hero, Michael Phelps. Michael's domination in his sport of choice has provided more written words and more pictures than any other athlete in modern times. Former Olympic star, Mark Spitz, in a TV interview, considers Phelps to be one of, if not greatest Olympians ever... He has broken Mark Spitz' record. by winnig 8 gold medals. . Time marches on and we now have a new swim hero for the Olympics.
Last week I made mention of the opening ceremonies for the Olympics but forgot to mention that I actually called one of the properties suggesting they might create something great with those drums. Just an idea.
Comedian Bernie Mac and soul singer Isaac Hayes passed away unexpectedly. Bernie Mac was considered by his fellow Kings of Comedy to be a genius. Isaac Hayes and I were both managed by my long time friend Ruth Bowen of Queen Bookings. Many, many years ago I opened in New York City at the Cheetah club for Isaac. Rest in peace, friends. Our world is less without you.
For all of my readers over the age of 30 or 40 or 50, or ....... you'll surly remember Andy Warhol and his artistic creations which included paintings of Campbell Soups and his involvement with underground films. That era also produced Holly Woodlawn who is a Puerto Rican transsexual who was hired to replace me in the stage production of Woman Behind Bars. I had been an earlier replacement for Divine. Out of the blue I received a call from Holly Woodlawn, Seems Holly is now on a cross country tour and is presenting Andy Warhol stories. Back in those days Andy was not really part of the Mr. Monti Rock phenomenon since I chose to take my brand to television with the likes of Johnny Carson and Merv Griffen. I had decided to be above ground, not underground. And now some of my videos are on You Tube.Check them out on'
www.youtube.com, go to broadcast videos and enter Monti Rock.
Jennifer Holiday will be appearing with George Wallace, the Mr. Las Vegas of the moment, at the Flamingo Aug 19th-Aug26th. Many of you will remember Jennifer for her performance in the original stage production of Dream Girls on Broadway. I'm excited to see Jennifer and of course George Wallace has become one of our favorite funny men. The Flamingo seems to have a lot going on with George Wallace as a regular, now he'll be joined by Jennifer Holiday, even if it's just a short time and finally Donny and Marie Osmond's tickets are on sale for their Flamingo appearances starting September 9. The Flamingo Cabaret is bringing in comedian Vinnie Favorito from his long time gig at O'Sheas. Vinnie, another of the "insult" comics ( along with Bobby Slayton) ,is one of the funniest comedians around.

Right now the biggest selling show is Cher at the Colosseum. And talk about timing, last week was the Cher Convention at Caesers Palace. Some of these Cher" look a likes" have been doing this for as much 27 years.Cher has yet to appear at one of these Conventions, but she does donate to thier charities.
The success of the Thursday night salsa dances at The South Point has resulted in the addition of Sunday afternoon sessions beginning Sept 21. It reminds one of Basin Street East in NYC whre Sunday afternoon dancing became THE thing to do. The Michito Sanchez band featuring percussionist Johhny (Dandy) Rodriguez provides the best in salsa dance music.
Seems like Palms Place is getting some free advertising from Hulk Hogan and his soon to be ex Linda. Linda wants to sell, at a profit no doubt, the four million dollar condo they were going to enjoy at Palm Place.
Raw Talent, the new show from The Havana Nights production crew is finally set to open at The Sahara on Sept 12. Let's hope all of the alleged backstage problems are behind them.
We're all sending get well wishes to my dear, dear friend Mimi Hines. best known for her Ford and Hines
act and many starring roles on Broadway. We love you Mimi, be well!

Just in--Donald Trump to the rescue. THE "Donald" has taken over the payments of Ed McMahon's fabulous home and saved our good friend, Ed , from losing it to foreclosure. A good deed from one gentleman to another.
A Monti best bet---"A Vulcan Odessey" the the book by Lawrence Montaigne. He has acted in Star Trek, and danced and/or acted in 25 films and over 200 tv shows.
And once again, The Rev Monti, (Million Dollar Weddings),will be back next week

With all the events in Las Vegas this week I ventured out of my fortress to the opening of Stars and Stripes Air Tours, the only off-airport heliport facility in Las Vegas. Unlike the usual suspects in attendance, the frequent freeloaders, it was nice to see Mr. and Mrs. Ira Sternberg and Mr. and Mrs. Rick White all from the Hilton Hotel. At my table we r e Mr. and Mrs Lance and Ava Posner and their son Mark Anthony Posner. Bill Acosta and his wife, Jeanne and Blair Farrington were enjoying the evening. There was a h elicopter ride all over Las Vegas . This is a new business venture, although the owners have a combined 75 years of experience in helicopters and heliports. A small wedding chapel is also located on the premises. Hey guys, REV MONTI is available! They are located at 500 E. Cheyenne Ave and can be reached at 888-779-0800 Hollywood is going to call......
Justin Timberlake and friends will perform at a special concert, benefitng the Shrilners Hospital on Oct 17th at Planet
Hollywood Theater for Performing Arts. Tickets go on sale Aug. 20th.. Steve Lawrence at the Orleans Aug 15th and Carrot Top still doing fine at the Luxor. How about our one and only, Jerry Lewis, being stopped at McCarran Airport with a concealed weapon? We all know the annual MDA Telethon is coming up so we can only add, "Leave Jerry alone"! On July 30 Anita Mann Productions in Santa Monica unveiled their latest musical, “ Imagine This .” Expectations are high for this latest creation. I've been told the mu s ic will be memorable. Beth Trachtenberg is producing the show and taking it to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group Theatres in their New London Theatre for opening on November 19. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera continues to do well at the Venetian and of course Anita Mann has Fantasy at the Luxor which also has become a Las Vegas mainstay. Maybe this latest, Imagine This, will follow in the footsteps of other successful shows.
As a local, if you've never taken the time or been adventurous enough to see Jubilee at Bally's , don't miss this opportunity. Bally's currently is offering $27 tickets for Las Vegas residents. Jubilee is one of Don Arden's best known productions and it really shouldn't be missed. In fact, if you haven't seen it recently, now is your chance because a good show is worth seeing more than once. Jubilee is glitzy, glamorous, gorgeous and considered part of the Las Vegas fabric.
Las Vegas locals may remember William Fuller who was Sandy Murphy's benefactor during those trying times following the mysterious death of Benny Binion. Mr. Fuller recently passed away so let's all hope Sandy's trying times are over. Rumors are still flying....
Is Michael Jackson going into a new theater in the space soon to be vacated by the Star Trek Experience at The Hilton????
The floundering economy is beginning to hit the casinos hard. Boyd has suspended further construction on the Echelon until further notice and MGM/Mirage is allegedly having additional funding problems on the gigantic City Center complex

As a columnist, yours truly, Monti Rock
III, sometimes gets knocked around a bit over my rumor mill. But, alas!
We must continue.
Is Celine coming back to the Colosseum? Rumor has it that Celine may make
another Las Vegas appearance in 2010.. Gordie Brown closes the first of
August at Planet Hollywood's V Theater and is reportedly opening for Celine on
her Great American Tour for the next five months.

07.9.2008 The 4th of July celebration has come and gone, all those fireworks spent, the words of patriotism quieted. Back to business as usual. Here's hoping your celebration was safe and sane.
Your columnist ventured out to the fabulous Las Vegas Strip to check out, among several things, the "fire sale" at Toni Braxton's merchandise store at the Flamingo. The only thing better than shopping is shopping where there's a sale. The 80 percent off all t-shirts, hats and souvenirs just can't be ignored. If you're a Toni Braxton fan, run don't walk to the Toni Braxton merchandise store at the Flamingo. While at the Flamingo I couldn't help but notice the Donny and Marie posters. I saw them everywhere except in the garden outside the buffet where the pink flamingos seem to own the stage.
Over at Treasure Island, Sara Larson (of George Clooney fame ) w as a no - show at the grand opening of Christian Audigier Nightclub. What could have kept her away? ?
From the Flamingo we drove to the Rio Hotel to see Tim Molyneaux's latest creation, "All In, the Poker Musical." The initial introduction for the show was made by Phil Hellmuth, World Series of Poker Champion and could the timing be not be any better with the World Series of Poker currently in progress at the Rio? I think not! The Rio was absolutely a buzz with poker players and tourists, parking was a challenge with most of the valet services full by 6:00 PM. The cast of Tim's new show was superb and Tim brought the house to their feet with his number. This musical might just have legs. Seen in the audience was Jack Wishna, the deal maker and Mr. and Mrs. Clint Holmes, sporting new hair do's, with Bill Fayne and Earl Turner. Personally I want to thank the staff at the Rio for welcoming this columnist and treating me with the utmost respect, as it should be.
I called the Luxor to find out why Criss Angel's show has been delayed, again. The word used was "technical , " Mr. Rock. Hey, we're all waiting for Criss to show us why he thinks he's better than the wonderful David Copperfield. My readers know that I'm a fan of David and he's been a fan of Monti Rock since the Disco-Tex days.
All in all it was a busy week that began with the opening of Wes Winters' Liberace tribute show at the Steve Wyrick Theater on the Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood. Wes and his manager Rod Russell are such wonderful friends I want nothing less than success for them. Wes is a great talent and shines as a showman. He and Rod are a wonderful addition to the Las Vegas entertainment scene. But I must say, both before the show and following the show I was left with the impression there could be some improvement concerning the Steve Wyrick Theater and the staff. In selling this theater I get the impression the staff doesn't really want to help the acts shine. Steve, you need to be really nice to my friend Wes. It's personal now.
When you think of Planet Hollywood you wonder why the V Theater and David Saxe have done so well. There's always people standing in line to buy tickets for their shows. David Saxe has produced a well-oiled machine.
I keep repeating it, but if we're not in a recession it appears that one is well on the way. Tourists are not driving or flying to Las Vegas like they have in the past. Statistics show that over-all business is down some 30 percent . Again I say, check the Internet where you can find hotel rooms, a show and even a dinner for as little as $20. I do exaggerate or do I elaborate? Case in point when it comes to Vegas economics. Look at the shows that are closing. Can we all afford Bette Midler at the Colosseum? One of thes only shows doing a great business continues to be "O" at the Bellagio. Word is that without the brokers and group sales all the shows would be suffering. The majority of tourist that come to Las Vegas are here for only three days. Those few days have to include gaming, a show, shopping and dinner. By the way, where are the tourists coming from, especially now with the price of gas and airline adding fees for such things as water, soft drinks and extra charges for luggage. Guess it's all over the gas prices.
What happened with the Crazy Horse this week? Did the deal not go through? It's very sad. Does Peter Cook (of Christie Brinkley fame) know about this??????
How about the Playboy girl Monica Chavez? She's the girl seen holding hands with our esteemed Governor Jim Gibbons. Messy divorce. Oh! Jim. Stop holding hands in public, it's not nice.
Last week I attempted to share some memories of my friend George Carlin while acknowledging his passing. George Carlin most recently has been appearing at the Orleans. I mention this because I have a very hot and cold relationship with Candi Casau, public relations for the Orleans. I always make an effort to be gracious and kind to all the public relations staff for the hotels and showrooms because their input can be shared with my readers. For example, if I send an e-mail in an attempt to get information and there is no response, it makes one think my publication is not important enough to get the news out on your artist. Hard to believe since Gaming Today is actually world-wide.
Steve Lawrence will be appearing without Edie (?)..... can this be true? I've always been a fan. Actually he'll be at The Orleans in Aug filling the late George Carlin's engagement. Edie is nursng a bad back.
On the Michael Jackson watch some have said Michael might be moving to Pahrump but my reliable sources tell me he's either buying or renting a house here in Las Vegas. Michael may want to keep the faces of his children under wrap, but Pahrump! Don't think so.
With the Osmonds opening at the Flamingo it would be absolutely fabulous to have the Jackson Family Reunion, and yes, I mean Latoya too, right here in Las Vegas.
Just received my invitation for the closing of Spamalot at the Wynn. Why did this show not work? Why is it that some broadway shows don't translate to Las Vegas crowsds? Why is Mamma Mia running for six years at Mandalay Bay. And now The Star Trek Show as thea Sahara will be closing. With the closing of Second City at the Flamingo following a successful six year run, maybe it comes down to economics. Let's remember we have BlueMan Group, Wayne Brady and Phantom of the Opera, all at the Venetian. The Palazzo is doing great business with Jersey Boys. Seems the hotels are all scrambling for your business. Last week there was a short-lived taxi strike. Too many taxis, maybe just not too many people,. they'd rather walk. Even though public transportation is up we don't hear much about the Monorail. Guess it's still crawling along.
Years ago when I arrived in Las Vegas I made the rounds of all the properties seeking work as an entertainer and one of the most gracious people I met was Judy Alberti. That was almost ten years ago. Judy has recently returned to Las Vegas to work at Station Casinos as entertainment director. She's got a job on her hands. Judy has already started the efforts and concert tickets are being reduced to $15.
To all my darling readers ....Don Antonio's Pizzeria 8810 Maryland Parkway 818-3788. Great Pizza, great salads, not to mention great bread.
Rev Monti...rev Monti.... C'mon folks, he's ready to "marry you.".

06.30.2008 Last week Barbara Walters and the ladies from the View were telecasting from Caesers Palace. The show had a terrific line up of Las Vegas talent like Penn & Teller, Wayne Brady, Bette Midler, Rita Rudner and the wonderful Danny Gans who soon will move from the Mirage to Steve Wynn's Encore.
The ladies seemed to be intrigued with the life style Rita Rudner is able to maintain while still performing at Harrah's. They thought her to be normal and to have a "normal" life. Rita's schedule will soon be altered with the opening of her play. It has been running at Little Theater and selling out.
Tim Molyneaux.. showcased his new musical. "ALL IN-THE POKER MUSICAL' , July 3rd-5th at The Riio The setting is the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. This is a musical about Las Vegas, created in Las Vegas and with L:as Vegas performers. With Poker such a hot spectator sport, this should be a hit. His current show "Bite" has been enyoying a long run at the Stratosphere for the past few years.
The Riviera Hotel and Casino just announced Kyle Dunnigan will be headliner at the Comedy Club July 7 through 13. Kyle's a regular on Cedric the Entertainer and has made several appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Word is he's a big on the "edgy" side but very funny. Brian McKim and Traci Skene join Kyle at the Comedy Club and are known for their stand-up comedy as well as their comedy writing.
Everyone that I spoke to or called to report on George Michaels' appearance at the MGM Grand Arena said the show was fabulous. Since George Michaels had not been on the scene for so many years I must admit I was not expecting such a reaction to his show. Please, Mr. Michaels, accept my acknowledment of your on-going talent.
At the Suncoast I went to see Lorna Luft, in the Songs My Mother Taught Me. I've been following this show since it first appeared at the Desert Inn when she opened for Don Rickles. Hand it to Lorna, the show is ready for Broadway. It was exciting to watch all those in line after the show waiting to get a signed copy of Lorna's latest CD.
Elton John celebrated is 200 performance at the Colosseum. I can't wait for Cher to return in August because she's camp personified. Cher is Cher. Of course
Bette is back and better than ever.
All my readers know I watch television so it's not surprising that I happen to catch my friend Frank Marino, in drag, on Extra. Frank is favorite of mine and I always give him a tip o' the hat. Television's America Has Talent has become another favorite of mine. It's great fun and Hasselhoff has gotten better while Ms. Osborne continues to delight us all.
We always have something to look forward to... like Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton, coming to the Flamingo, Liza Minelli ;Bill Cosby and the great
Al Green at Primm Valley.Caino Resorts. These "older "stars can show them how to do it! . Of course, as I keep reporting and reporting and reporting Criss Angel to open at the Luxor in September. July 3rd marks the opening of Christain Audigier-The Nightclub at Treasure Island. Night Club and Fashion come to life nightly-a novel approach.
What's the status of Michael Jackson? Is he buying a house here in Las Vegas, opening a show, a reunion of the Jackson 5? To me this is a dynamite idea. Let's make it happen.
This week I also ventured out to the Golden Nugget where I saw the Caveman again and treated myself and my guest to a great buffet. What makes a difference at the Golden Nugget is Justin McVay who's the Public Relations Manager and just celebrated his 30th birthday. Ah youth! Justin has one of those voices made for radio. By the way, The Golden Nugget has been named America's favorite Casino,. located in Downtown Las Vegas\ by the 2008 American Casino Guide
What I like about downtown is that it has a life of its own. With galleries, art colonies, gaming bookstores and some of the oldest casinos in Las Vegas, we're reminded that at one time the downtown area was Las Vegas. Downtown I found some of the most elegant and seedy people I've ever seen but from Monti Rock III, this columnist, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.
Maybe we'll soon take a peek at the secret life of Monti Rock III. as I have a reality show int the works. Big secret!!!!
The Rverend Monti reminds you that he is here to officiate at your "Million Dollar Wedding".

06.24.2008 George Carlin at seventy-one, what a tragic death. George and I go back a long time ago, in New York City when we were all part of the downtown coffee house set. Picture this, Barbra Streisand working the Bon Soir, Joan Rivers, Richard Pryor and a young Monti Rock III working the Cafe A-Go-Go. For some reason my agent at the time thought I would become a comic. A young gay hairdresser with long hair,an aspiring singer, would watch George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand work night after night on their craft, refining their material. Even then I was awed of the show business industry. I would see George Carlin do his material, jokes and playing the trumpet, very ivy-league with a nice suit and a tie,(show biz could not define this guy at that time).Richard Pryor was the one who got the essence of Monti where I would be the gay guy and he would be the gangster. This world of comics, mega stars and icons seem to be leaving. as there are fewer and fewer with us now.
To my readers of Monti Rock Blog I'm still here, I'm still writing, creating.

How about Whoopi Goldberg hosting the Tony Awards? Whoopi kept the show moving from what could be a dull show except for New Yorkers and the "Broadway Family It took a revival show, South Pacific, to win seven Tonys. However, the Latino show "In the Heights" showed us what real excitement is, followed by "Passing Strange." These exerpts made you want to see the full show. Others left one in limbo, as out of context, they lose impact. But, Broadway and New York still have the most exciting in the world. Meanwhile, CineVegas film festival is in full swing at the Palm. Opening night had Rainn Wilson and entourage arriving in what is billed as "The World's Largest Limo." Angelica Houston will be honored this year and the new "Get Smart" movie will be shown. This is the tenth year for CineVegas. Even though Michael Politz says he has been hurt by her, Robin Greenspun does such a great job introducing Las Vegas to culture, I always support her efforts. Last year my short subject "The Business of Being Monti Rock III" was shown at CineVegas to great response. Guess I should get started on Part Deux.
Years before Get Smart was a movie it was a long running television series with Don Adams and Barbara Feldon I was a hair dresser to Barbara Feldon and remember Don Adams as one of the funniest characters of that era. Steve Carell has the job of filling Don's shoes.
What's the deal with the Sahara? It was abrupt but Trent Carlini's Elvis Tribute gone. The Fab Four gone. A new show called Raw Talent or Raw Talent Live or No Talent Live produced by Bernie Yuman and Nicole Durr is opening. Nicole produced Havana Nights when it was at the Stardust.
Rumors around town indicate there may be other shows closing with the hotels and casinos tightening their belts.
Last week Jackie Collins, who is the sister of Joan Collins, was in town for a book signing for the latest of her twenty-five novels. I might just call Jackie to finish my own autobiography. I'm on my own tenth re-write.
My friend Tim Molyneux has a new show opening July 3 at the Rio Hotel Masquerade Ballroom. It's a musical and is called All In, The Poker Musical. The timing is perfect since the World Series of Poker is already underway. The show will be Broadway bound when it leaves the Rio. Tim is the writer, creator and the producer of Bite which has been running at the Stratosphere for four years. After previewing Tim's latest, All In, I must report the music is superb.
Lot of changes going on at the Flamingo. I was especially shocked when it was announced Second City's final show was set for August 1st. It was five years ago when yours truly was roasted by Second City. Word is that X Burlesque may add a second show with the absence of Second City and of course everyone is still waiting for the arrival of the Osmonds, Donny and Marie.
I don't like too many changes too fast so of course I was pleased when I heard my friend Bobby Slayton at Hooters had been saved by the bell. The deal to buy Hooters fell through so the pit bull of comedy has sibned on for another year. I recommend this show very highly, if you need a good laugh.
As expected Elton John's Red Piano is doing big business at Caesars Colosseum. Bette Midler will return to the Colosseum followed by Cher when Elton leaves. The Colosseum must have been one of the most successful investments in Las Vegas entertainment history. Big stars, big Colosseum, big $$. What a combination!
Even with the success stories in town like the Colosseum, and we have many success stories, Las Vegas is not totally immune to what appears to be an economic recession. With gas prices at $4.50 a gallon, shows closing, restaurants offering two for one deals, foreclosures through the roof, it's hard to imagine paying high prices for tickets to a show. My advice is to search the Internet where you'll find bargains for show tickets. We can't deny ourselves all the pleasures of life. See a show, laugh, have fun. Enjoy! With this in mind, a good show at moderate prices is the the new show "Room 776". This new play by our own Rita Rudner and husband, Martin Bergman, was first shown in a short version starring Rita and comic Bobby Slayton. This expanded version is at The Las Vegas Little Theater
It was an intimate and emotional farewell when Wes Winters sang and played his final song at the Liberace Museum last week. Wes has become a dear, dear friend, he's a great talent and a generous soul. I said it was an intimate farewell because every person in the audience felt as if Wes was playing and singing just to them. Both Wes and his manager, Rod Russell were embraced by the many visitors to the Liberace Museum over the last four years. Wes will open his new show at the Steve Wyrick Theater on Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood on July 1 and I predict a big hit for Planet Hollywood and for my friend Wes Winters.
Treasure Island has landed THe Latin Kings of Comedy starring Paul Rodriguez and a group of top Latino comics for Sept.12. Fans of the funny Mr, Rodriguz have something to look forward to after a long, hot summer. Salsero, the South Point's Thursday nights dance session, is running strong, the Michito Sancho band featuring "Dandy" Rodriguez, still has them dancing to the wee hours.
Golden Rainbow's Ribbon of LIfe, the LAs Vegas-based HIV/Aids Charity had its annual show this past weekend. Thanks to our local entertainers who worked Saturday and Sunday for this great cause.
Weddings, weddings, weddings! Remember--THE REVEREND MONTI.

Saturday evening's White Party to celebrate Monti Rock's 70th Annual Birthday couldn't have been more delightful. The party was held at Tim Molyneux's beautiful home. The outside ambiance was enhanced by the many waterfalls and flaming fire pits which created such a dramatic scene. And you know I like drama. After all, I am drama. Tim is one of our newest young producers in Las Vegas and my sincere thanks to Tim for being such a gracious host. His show, Bite, is enjoying a successful run at the Stratosphere,
The party was a thank you for my many wonderful friends, my marketing people, and my supporters. The evening was filled with music, food, and wine. It was magic. I was overwhelmed and verklempt by all the love surrounding me. Special thanks to the talented Wes Winters, his manager Rod Russell, the Phantom himself Brent Barrett, my long time friends Paige O'Hara, Mimi Hines, Bill and Molly Lairamore and most importantly my hostess and marketing lady Terese DiMartino. Thanks to my assistant Sherrie and my partner Bruce, the photographers Eric T Wilson Roy, and, of course, Ed Foster Thanks to everyone for the fabulous food, drink and even the cleanup. I love you all and you are great friends. Is it too early to start planning for next year? Another Annual 70th!
Wes Winters was so kind to play the piano at the party and was joined by our wonderful host, Tim, who surprised us all with a song. Following Tim's song Brent Barrett thrilled us all with beautiful ballads that I couldn't help but notice seemed to melt the hearts of many of the ladies at the party.
Wes will open his Liberace Tribute Show at the Steve Wyrick Theater at Planet Hollywood at 1 p.m. July 1, after closing at the Liberace Museum on June 11th. Wes is one of the best tribute artists I've ever seen or heard and his appearance at the Steve Wyrick Theater may just be what the Theater needs. He will also appear at the Triq Lounge in the Miracle Mile shopping center (Planet Hollywood) on Wednesday and Saturday evenings beginning June 4th .
Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian will soon have to make some changes since the fabulous Brent Barrett who plays the Phantom will be leaving the show. Brent's departure is scheduled for June 6th so if you want to hear this magnificent voice and see this handsome version of Phantom, run don't walk to the Venetian. Brent will soon be on his way to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for his appearance on June 28th. Fortunately for his Las Vegas fans he will maintain a home here and will return to Las Vegas for a July 4th spectacular at The Hills Park at Summerlin with the Las Vegas Philharmonic.
Back at the party, my good friend Paige O'Hara and her husband Michael Piontek provided bartenders. Paige is doing double duty right now with Menopause the Musical at the Hilton plus she has art shows at two galleries here in Las Vegas. Another thank you to Roxanne Miller, a Las Vegas real estate tycoon. Thank you darling for all those diamonds.... I know they're real.
The wonderful Mimi Hines returned to Las Vegas, just in time for my party, after appearing in The Full Monty at the Jupiter Theater in Florida. In addition to her appearances across the country Mimi is busy writing a book about her life on the road with Phil Ford. Mimi is one of the best friends I've ever had.
On a sad note, we have to acknowledge the passing of a movie director, Sidney Pollack. Sidney, like me, also acted in movies from time to time and I met him during one of my movie endeavors. Sidney will be missed by actors and the entire industry.
I don't cover movies often because, as the saying goes, Las Vegas is my beat. There's so much hype about the movie Sex and The City it can't be ignored. Of course Indiana Jones seems to be hauling in the money. I was up for that part after Tom Selleck turned it down but alas Harrison Ford was the winner. Sixty-five and still doing his own stunts! Oh, sure...
Robin Williams' show at the MGM Grand Arena was wild. He had a star studded audience with lots of regular comics that came to see him. Robin didn't talk about his recent divorce, which is supposed to be the best divorce in Hollywood. He is still one of the funniest comics of our time.
I hear there are still talks circulating about Michael Jackson. Possible show at the Hilton, the Trump, the Palm? I don't know but let's face it, Michael is one of the great pop entertainers of our time and wherever he stops the crowds will appear. His most recent sighting has his face covered in black cloth, etc.
I went back to Hooters to catch Bobby Slayton again. This man is funny. Just remember don't sit in the front unless you have really thick skin. Even then, you’ll blush. And don't forget to catch Caveman at the Golden Nugget. This has become one of the longest runs ever for a one man show.
Toni Braxton has had to cancel her show at The Flamingo due to Ill health. Too bad, she is a great talent and we wish her well.
Rumor has it the fantastic Cuban show, Havana Nights, will be returning to the strip shortly at the Sahara. Let's hope so as this is one of the most exciting musical revues around.
For anyone in search of that early Las Vegas style people love to talk about, you know the scene that was always on the agenda for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley and so many others, The Golden Steer Steakhouse offers a breath of Vegas nostalgia not to be missed. The Golden Steer has been a mainstay of fine dining in Las Vegas since 1958 and continues to be known for the quality of their steaks and seafood. Many of the staff at The Golden Steer have been there for thirty years. Maybe that's why the service is so spectacular. Anyway, for visitors and locals s
